Sundance Review: Celine Song’s ‘Past Lives’

The word “romantic” doesn’t have much place in cinema these days, serving mostly as a modifier for “comedy”. The term “women’s picture” has also passed out of favor since its ’40s heyday, regardless of the fact that the films that exemplified it usually featured strong female characters and almost always pushed back at the pressures of male-run society. With her feature debut Past Lives, which screened to a double standing ovation this week in the Premieres strand at Sundance, playwright Celine Song has killed two birds with one stone, creating an elegant and unexpectedly mesmerizing character piece that speaks profoundly to the concept of love in the modern age while using an intelligent and ambitious, but still very relatable woman to do so.

‘Theater Camp’ Producers Jessica Elbaum & Will Ferrell On Sundance Entry & Whether Ferrell Will Sing & Tap Dance With Ryan Reynolds If ‘Spirited’ Tune Gets Nom

Gloria Sanchez, the production partnership between Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum that ramped up after Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy ended their long partnership, today launches Theater Camp. Coming on the heels of the Apple TV+ musical Spirited, Theater Camp premieres shortly at Eccles as an acquisition title. Directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, the film stars Gordon and Ben Platt as longtime best friends who return to an upstate run down theater camp which is imperiled when its founder lapses into a coma due to an unfortunate strobe light incident. Her son takes over, and he tries to stave off foreclosure even though he initially has little interest in greasepaint and the boards. The project grew out of Booksmart, another Gloria Sanchez production. Elbaum & Ferrell produced with PictureStart’s Erik Feig (who financed), Samie Kim Falvey, Julia Hammer, Ryan Heller, Maria Zuckerman, Noah Galvin, Gordon, Lieberman and Platt.

‘Plane’ Review: Gerard Butler Pilots This Serviceable But Fun B-Movie-Style Action Flick

You can imagine the committee meetings devoted to finding just the right title for primo action star Gerard Butler’s latest in which he plays an airline pilot encountering lightning strikes that force him to crash land on a rebels-infested remote island in the Philippines. As it criss crosses the airline disaster genre and frightening jungle thriller, why not just tell the public what it really is. While it could be called Terror Island, or maybe Pirates Jungle, or Flight To The Death, the producers came up with the inspired plain Plane. That works well enough for anyone expecting Airport meets The High And The Mighty, but really it is just the first half that fits snugly into that category, nail biting as it is.
