Horror-thriller ‘Sting’ Wraps Production, Sells Widely for Cornerstone

Thanks to the massive number of true-crime docs on streaming services, there are a ton of armchair detectives, all thinking they can help crack the case. Well, in the new film, “To Catch a Killer,” an FBI reject gets the chance to prove her worth while tracking down a prolific murderer.

Naman Ramachandran Fremantle has acquired global rights to “The Piano,” the format from Love Productions, makers of “The Great British Bake Off.” “The Piano,” hosted by Claudia Winkleman, recently launched in the U.K. on broadcaster Channel 4 and is a ratings success. Created by Richard McKerrow, the British version of the format sees talented amateur pianists invited each week to play on public pianos in well-known train stations. Unknown to the performers, acclaimed classical pianist Lang Lang and platinum selling pop superstar Mika are secretly watching and one performer from each train station is invited to perform on one of the world’s most prestigious stages. 

Julia MacCary editor Apple TV+ dropped the trailer for the upcoming rom-com turned thriller “Ghosted,” which stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. The trailer shows Evans’ character Cole certain that Sadie (de Armas) is not just “ghosting” him, or ignoring his texts, after one date. Convinced they are meant to be together, he travels to London in what he hopes to be a romantic gesture, only to discover Sadie is not the person he thought, and is actually part of the CIA. What ensues is a spy-thriller where “action speaks louder than words.” De Armas joins the film after her recent Oscar nomination for “Blonde.” Her credits also include “Deep Water,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “No Time to Die.” Evans has played Captain America in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as well as performed in “Before We Go,” “Gifted” and “Playing It Cool.” Evans and de Armas previously acted together in “Knives Out” and “The Gray Man.”

Alice Winocour‘s “Revoir Paris,” or its English title “Paris Memories,” bowed at the Cannes Film Festival last May to general acclaim. And later on, star Virginie Efira nabbed a César for her performance.

You could potentially argue that there weren’t that many breakout movies from the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival last year, at least not acquisition titles without distribution. But if you were going to mention one, at the very least, it would undoubtedly have to be “How To Blow Up A Pipeline,” an eco-terrorism thriller from director Daniel Goldhaber (“CAM,” “Some Kind of Heaven”).
