Hailed by the jury as “one of this year’s most distinguished films both creatively and artistically,” Qiu Jiongjiong’s “A New Old Play” was named best film for the Young Cinema Competition (Chinese Language). “A New Old Play” is a tale of a family of Sichuan Opera artists living through a tumultuous era. It also collected the FIPRESCI Prize, with the jury commending the film for “its masterful approach and inventive visual style.”  In the global category, Palestinian director Maha Haj’s “Mediterranean Fever” was chosen as the Firebird Award winner for being “an all-rounded gem that is at once a thriller, social comedy, and odd couple bromance.”

Popular TV show Gladiators is returning to the BBC next year, it has been announced.The programme will return with an 11-episode series and will be welcoming a new generation of “superhumans” who will compete against contestants in the “ultimate test of speed and strength”, the BBC said.The series, which will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, will include new games alongside classic challenges – with each episode ending with fan favourite, gruelling obstacle course The Eliminator. At its peak, Gladiators – broadcast from 1992 to 2000 – drew huge audiences to its Saturday evening ITV slot as the famous call of “Contenders Ready? Gladiators Ready?” echoed across TV screens.

Pale Waves have opened up about wanting to work with Blink-182’s Travis Barker in a new interview.Speaking to NME for this week’s Big Read, the band said they want to work with the drummer in the future and revealed that he almost worked with them on their latest album, ‘Unwanted’.Barker was set to appear on an ‘Unwanted’ track but couldn’t because of scheduling conflicts.Ciara Doran told NME they “know our paths will cross one day, though, I’m sure of it.”Elsewhere in the Big Read, Pale Waves lead vocalist and guitarist Heather Baron-Gracie opened up about the band’s near-fatal bus crash.Three of the four members of Pale Waves — Doran, Hugo Silvani and Charlie Woods – as well as the band’s crew — were on the bus during the accident which took place in February of 2020. The four-piece had been supporting Halsey on her European arena tour, and were set to play at the Verti Music Hall in Berlin.The vehicle slid into a ditch while travelling between Sweden and Germany.

Vivienne Chow Hong Kong boy band Mirror has pulled out of Japan’s Summer Sonic festival, organizers confirmed, while investigations continue into last week’s horrific incident that severely injured two dancers on stage during a live concert in their hometown.Summer Sonic announced on Friday that the 12-piece group has canceled the performance at the festival’s Tokyo Pacific Stage, originally scheduled for Aug. 20, “due to unforeseen circumstances.”“We sincerely apologize to all of you and hope to have the opportunity to participate again,” a comment from Mirror cited in Summer Sonic’s statement.The news follows a tragic incident on July 28, when a giant LED screen hanging above the stage fell and struck 27-year-old dancer “Mo” Lee Kai-yin in the head during Mirror’s concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum.
