The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are currently enjoying a tour of Scotland with a focus on discussing mental health. While they are there Prince William, 39, and Catherine, 40, are addressed as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn. When William married Catherine in 2011, the Queen bestowed many titles upon the couple including this one amongst others including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Baron and Lady Carrickfergus. They’re not the only royals to go by different names in Scotland, though.
When Prince Charles is there, he is known as The Duke of Rothesay which is one of a number of titles that were always held by the heir to the throne of Scotland - and now belonging to the first in line to the British throne. The others are Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. Prince Harry received the title of Earl of Dumbarton ahead of his wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018 where he was also named as the Duke of Sussex.
While Prince Andrew was made Duke of York and Earl of Inverness at the time of his marriage to Sarah Ferguson in 1986. Prince Edward didn’t receive a Scottish title when he married Sophie Rhys-Jones in June 1999 but twenty years later, his mother changed that. In March 2019, to mark his 55th birthday, the Queen deemed her youngest son as the Earl of Forfar with Edward and Sophie visiting the area soon afterwards.
There are two other high profile royals holding Scottish titles with the Queen’s cousin, Edward, Duke of Kent as the Earl of St. Andrews.Though, his eldest son, George, is now known by that title. Another cousin, the Duke of Gloucester, counts Baron Culloden among his titles.
