The world premiere of “Blonde” at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month confirmed that Andrew Dominik‘s film is everything critics expected it to be, and maybe more. After all, the film did receive a 14-minute standing ovation, the longest at the festival.
Ana de Armas finds it "disgusting" that her nude scenes from the highly anticipated Netflix film "Blonde" will most likely go viral on the internet. "Blonde," which is based on a fictional take the life of Marilyn Monroe, debuts on the streaming service Sept. 28. Speaking to Variety, de Armas discussed candidly what her reaction will be once the nude scenes hit the internet. "I know what's going to go viral," the 34-year-old actress said, being the one to first address the scenes.
Ana de Armas needed to convince Netflix that she could be Marilyn Monroe. She was already the first choice of director Andrew Dominik, whose film “Blonde,” a surrealist vision of the life and death of the screen legend, had been reportedly cast with various leading ladies before alighting on de Armas, but “Knives Out” — the hit film in which the previously little-known performer sat at the center of the mystery — hadn’t yet come out. In 2019, few knew her name. De Armas brought her accent coach to the in-person screen test with Netflix. “I hadn’t had the training and the voice and everything,” says de Armas, who was born and raised in Cuba. “So my coach was crouching on the floor, under the table.” The stakes were high. “I just knew that everything we did that day was going to be the definitive test of the movie to be greenlit or not.” The scene was one in which Monroe pleads with husband Joe DiMaggio to let her move to New York so that she can “start from zero, away from Hollywood,” de Armas recalls; passion had to enter Monroe’s voice, all as the woman under the table fed de Armas the proper pronunciations of the lines.
“Cobra Kai” Season 5 has once again clinched the first spot in the Netflix Top 10 in the second week since its premiere, with 95.6 million hours viewed. The top 3 on the English TV list this week was rounded out by “Fate: The Winx Saga” Season 2, which debuted with nearly 49 million hours viewed, and “The Crown” Season 1, following closely behind with 40.8 million hours viewed after news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.Other notable entries on the list included documentary series “Sins of Our Mother,” from director Skye Borgman, which debuted on the list with 24.4 million hours viewed, as well as “The Crown” Season 2, which marked its first entry on the list with 16.7 million hours viewed.
When it comes to biopics, they don’t get much more intensely intimate than Andrew Dominik‘s “Blonde.” And the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month confirmed that Ana de Armas expertly channels Marilyn Monroe in her performance. In fact, de Armas got so close to Monroe during the film’s production the actress attempted to contact the deceased starlet, in a way.
