Heading west! Helen Mirren grew up far from the American frontier, but her character in 1923 is more like her than viewers might think.
“[Creator] Taylor Sheridan likes to write for the actor and the personality of the actor that is going to play the role,” the Oscar winner, 77, exclusively told Us Weekly ahead of the Yellowstone spinoff’s Sunday, December 18, premiere. “Cara is very much — as Jacob is constructed around Harrison [Ford] and Harrison’s personal qualities — Cara is constructed around me.”
The Queen actress thinks her character reflects her “sense of humor” as well as her “stoicism,” professionalism and love. “But it’s a tough love,” Mirren added. “It’s not a sentimental love.”
The Woman in Gold star also imbued her portrayal of Cara, who is Irish, with faith. “She’s a Christian — a Catholic — and I think she has carried that faith with her,” the Tony Award winner told Us. “She doesn’t advertise it, it’s not a big thing. I wanted to have a little crucifix up on the set, but I said, ‘It’s gotta be really small.’ … If you don’t notice it, it’s fine, but it’s just a little indication of where Cara’s faith is. So, I do think she’s a woman of faith, but at the same time she’s practical, she’s down-to-earth and she’s realistic.”
While Cara may share some personality traits with the Prime Suspect alum, Mirren noted that she would have trouble fitting in on the ranch in real life. “I could never be a pioneer woman. I like my comfort too much,” she quipped. “I want my electric blanket at night.”
The Fate of the Furious actress stars alongside Ford, 80, in 1923, which follows some of the Dutton family’s ancestors in the era of the Great Depression. The Star Wars actor plays the uncle of John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale)

Taylor Sheridan looks like he has another hit on his hands with “1923,” the second prequel series to his TV sensation “Yellowstone.” And there are even more “Yellowstone” prequels on the way: “6666,” set in modern-day Texas, and “1883: The Bass Reeves Story.” But the most exciting upcoming Sheridan project may be one no one knows about: a show he’s shot secretly with some huge movie stars.
Five seasons in, Taylor Sheridan‘s “Yellowstone” remains a TV sensation, with two prequels already out and two more on the way. And based on the response this past weekend to the premiere of “1923,” the second “Yellowstone” prequel, Sheridan won’t slow down any time soon.
Taylor Sheridan is basically keeping Paramount+ afloat right now. Okay, yes, that’s hyperbolic, but the writer-director-producer-creator of all things “Yellowstone” has been printing money for the studio and streaming service thanks to his mega TV franchise.
EXCLUSIVE: If the record launch episode ratings of 1923 reveals anything, it is that viewing audiences on both Paramount+ and the Paramount Network have an endless appetite for Taylor Sheridan’s frontier tales of the Dutton’s and their Yellowstone ranch. Headlined by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and featuring a coterie of stars in waiting, 1923 is an epic production that Sheridan estimates had to be one of the highest per episode investments ever made on a series, between $30 million and $35 million a pop.
The Yellowstoners, Mike DeAngelo and Rodrigo Perez, have returned. This time, instead of breaking down the latest episode of “Yellowstone,” the hosts turn their attention to the latest spinoff series, “1923.” Also created by Taylor Sheridan, “1923” follows Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), who have taken over the land for the Dutton family and are trying to raise a ranching empire in the 1920s amidst potential range wars, prohibition, and the Great Depression.
Taylor Sheridan’s latest installment in the Yellowstone universe, headlined by Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, has set a new benchmark for the prolific creator — and for Paramount+.
Josh Lucas was cast as a young John Dutton before Yellowstone even premiered on Paramount, but it would take five seasons before the character’s backstory would actually start to unspool. Here, the actor best known for A Beautiful Mind and Sweet Home Alabama talks about the interminable wait to hang out on the Montana ranch with everyone else.
this evening, and Christmas is in one week, but before you start streaming all those , we have a bunch of new stuff to get to first, starting with of Emily in Paris on Netflix. The new season (which premieres this Wednesday, December 21) puts Emily's career front and center, with a focus on the highs and lows that come from starting a new business in marketing and PR. It's not just Emily who is going through a career transition—Madeline, Sylvie, and several other characters (who shall remain nameless for now…because spoilers) find themselves at a turning point.
A romance with a rocky start. Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford have been together for more than 30 years, but their first encounter didn’t go smoothly.
“Violence has always haunted this family,” Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), from “1883,” says at the beginning of “1923,” the new “Yellowstone” spin-off from creator/writer Taylor Sheridan, a familiar if still watchable show thanks to its cast. “Where [violence] doesn’t follow, we hunt it down, we seek it,” she adds for good measure.
As we head into a robust holiday season where all studios want to trailer on 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water to show off their summer 2023, here’s the new Warner Bros teaser to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie as the title doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
