A whopping 7.6 million Brits are living with heart disease and health experts say eating bacon doesn't help matters.
When eaten frequently, bacon will raise cholesterol, increasing your risk of coronary heart disease, the most common type of the condition.
Mayo Clinic, a renowned US medical centre, has warned bacon lovers about its unfortunate effects on the heart, The Express reported.
Just two rashers of bacon and two sausages at breakfast bypasses how much red or processed meat experts say you should eat a day.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) suggests that with an ageing and growing population and improved survival rates from heart and circulatory events, we could see these numbers rise still further.
The Mayo Clinic has outlined why eating bacon may not be a good choice, according to a cardiologist named Dennis Bruemmer.
He states: "Bacon tastes fantastic but it's high in salt and it'll drive up your blood pressure."
He adds: "It's high in fat and will elevate your cholesterol if it's consumed frequently. And both of those lead to heart problems."
Indeed, if you currently eat more than 90g (cooked weight) of red or processed meat a day, the Department of Health and Social Care advises that you cut down to 70g.
Processed meat refers to meat that has been preserved by smoking, curing, salting or adding preservatives. This includes sausages, bacon, ham, salami and pâtés, according to the NHS.
It states: "A cooked breakfast containing two typical British sausages and two rashers of bacon is equivalent to 130g."
