A man charged over his alleged involvement in the Greenock firebomb attacks has been left seriously injured after being ‘slashed’ in prison.
Robert Warnock was attacked by a fellow inmate while on remand at HMP Addiewell, West Lothian, on Thursday last week.
The 25-year-old’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police have confirmed.
An investigation into the circumstances of the incident remains ongoing and no one has yet been charged in connection.
The attack, which is understood to have involved a bladed object, is said to have taken place on a communal landing within the prison.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 5.30pm on Thursday, 10 February, officers received a report of a serious assault taking place within HMP Addiewell.
“A 25-year-old man suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries as a result. Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing."
An HMP Addiewell spokesperson added: “We do not comment on individual prisoners. “However we can confirm there was an incident at HMP Addiewell last week.
“This is subject to an investigation, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
Warnock is currently awaiting trial after being charged with conspiring to murder a man alongside six co-accused.
The seven men are charged with engaging in criminal conduct to "assault, endanger life, murder and to cause serious damage to the property of relatives and associates of Leonard Cole junior”.
Prosecutors state the conspiracy took place between July and October 2020 at various addresses in Shotts Prison, North Lanarkshire and Greenock, Renfrewshire.
The charge states that the conspiracy included meetings, conversations, telephone calls and social media messages.
