Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Further media industry upheaval is on the cards, as the world exits from COVID and heads towards possible recession, warned financier and media advisor Joe Ravitch. “A lot of trends are now being reversed,” said Ravitch, partner and co-founder of Raine group. He was speaking at the APOS conference in Singapore, where U.S.-based Raine has recently opened a local office. Where the pandemic kept people indoors and online, since the loosening of health restrictions theatrical cinema, theme parks, concerts, gyms and in-person sport and music events have rebounded. People’s online behavior has also been altered.
“Traditional media is losing ground,” said Ravitch. In new media a bit of a bubble is happening. It is becoming a battle for share in a shrinking market, not a growing market.”
He said that even though some countries have laws that keep certain sports on broadcast TV, sports are increasingly moving over to some form of direct-to-consumer platform. That spells change. “Sports is the last thing holding the legacy structure together,” he warned. Asia is leaping ahead of the U.S. in some ways, he said, because it is not tied down by a legacy cable and pay-TV business. Examples include social commerce and livestreaming. “Livestreaming will come into the west having been developed in Asia,” he said. Asian media firms, however, may face a challenge from (mostly U.S.-based) global consortia, even in something as granular as local TV. “We are getting to a new level. Local broadcasters don’t have

He wrote in a lengthy piece for America's Esquire magazine: "If we want safer communities, more freedom, and better leaders, we’re gonna have to build better people.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Kevin Mayer says that the investment strategy at Candle Media, the hard-charging entertainment startup that he heads with Tom Staggs, is product of his career time at Disney and TikTok. While those two companies are behemoths and Candle Media a newcomer, the claim is not as outlandish as it seems. At Disney, Mayer was largely responsible the launch of the direct-to-consumer streaming businesses that became Disney+. And as Disney, Pixar and other group content was made exclusive and contained within a walled garden, it stoked demand for premium independently-made content. Candle Media sets its sights on becoming just such a supplier.

William Earl Spoiler alert: The entire plot of “Pearl” and “X” will be discussed in this article. Who knew a church dance tryout would result in one of the year’s strongest film monologues? That’s the case with “Pearl,” Ti West’s twisty, hallucinatory ode to Technicolor-era film. It’s the prequel to this year’s grimy porn slasher “X,” in which Mia Goth played an aspiring XXX actress as well as a makeup-laden, nearly-unrecognizable elderly woman named Pearl who ended up killing most of the film crew staying on her farm. In the latest film, Goth takes on a third role of Pearl as a young woman.
is gushing. Can you talk about the timetable of shooting “X” alongside “Pearl?”Well, “X” was written and was sort of green-lit and we were going off to New Zealand to make it, and it was during the peak of the pandemic and New Zealand was a safe place to make a movie. And we had spent a lot of time and effort to set up an environment down there with a crew and to get visas and to get everyone in through quarantine and to build an infrastructure a) to make a movie and b) this specific movie that was “X,” meaning building a barn and turning New Zealand into America.
