EXCLUSIVE: In an unprecedented move, Netflix and major exhibition circuits in the U.S. and UK recently agreed a 30-day theatrical window for Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This comes after years of discussions on finding “a way forward to show their high-quality productions on our screens,” says Tim Richards, founder and CEO of Vue International which will be showing the anticipated sequel in its theaters in the UK, Germany and Italy.

Tuesday’s earnings interview. Sarandos on Tuesday was asked about the unique theatrical strategy for the “Knives Out” sequel, which will open in a sneak preview for one week over the Thanksgiving holiday a month before it debuts on Netflix. While the film will play at AMC and Regal locations, a first for any Netflix movie, it will only play on 600 screens.

Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos tossed cold water on hopes that the streamer’s recent deal with major cinema chains for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery could be the start of something bigger.
