‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Filmmakers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan Sign Overall Deal With Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures Entertainment has been busy over the past four and a half years with a steady stream of deal activity.Most of the transactions haven’t made big headlines because they haven’t involved big dollars compared with megabucks media mergers and acquisitions of late.

Sony Pictures Classics has set a March 25 theatrical release date for The Duke, directed by the late Roger Michell. The film starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren will open in theaters in New York and Los Angeles before expanding in the following weeks. The dramedy is currently playing at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles for a one-week awards qualifying run through Dec. 16.

Prolific director, writer and producer Craig Zobel is continuing his relationship with HBO, extending his overall deal for an additional three years. He previously signed a two-year overall deal in January 2020.

Going all the way back to the 1990s, Sony Pictures had been desperately trying to mount a third hard-canon “Ghostbusters” movie on the big screen. When those plans eventually crumbled in the 2010s, director Paul Feig was given the keys to attempt a female-driven reboot with 2016’s “Ghostbusters: Answer The Call,” which was largely seen as a flop as it was concurrently embattled by hateful, misogynistic online trolls.
