Georgia to Reopen Movie Theaters & Other Businesses on April 27

For movie theaters shuttered by coronavirus, it’s become something of a mantra: “Just wait until ‘Tenet.'”

In-theater advertising firm National CineMedia on Tuesday posted a widened first-quarter loss, on lower revenues, after major cinema chains in mid-March shuttered their theaters. The company recorded a net loss of $3.7 million, or 5 cents per share, against a year-earlier loss of $1.1 million, or 1 cent per share.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday offered some more clarity on how his state is planning to reopen its nonessential businesses, noting especially that movie theaters fall into a category that will likely take "months" to reopen.

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on Monday cautioned consumers it won't reopen its Texas locations this weekend hours after the state said it would begin lifting stay-at-home orders instituted because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Alamo — headquartered in Austin — is one of the country's leading independent cinema chains and operates 40-plus locations across the U.S.

As social distancing becomes the new norm amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, theaters have temporarily darkened their screens, forcing many studios to push back release dates of upcoming films. But some are dropping their newest releases on streaming for at-home quarantine viewing, instead.

The state of Georgia is aiming to be among the first to restart its economy in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. But in the state’s sizable entertainment sector, nobody is raring to get back to work just yet.

As theaters across the nation reopen in the coming months after closures due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, IFC Films will offer library titles to indie houses and waive the rental fees. The company is calling the initiative the Indie Theater Revival Project.

Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday announced an aggressive reopening plan for his state that would allow cinemas to begin reopening early next week.
