Gary Neville has revealed that whilst on England duty he approached Steven Gerrard about signing for Manchester United, but his proposal was met with a swift rebuttal from the Liverpool legend.
United dominated the England set-up around the early 2000s with the likes of Neville, Rio Ferdinand, David Beckham and Paul Scholes perennially in the squad.
However, there was an abundance of talent from other Premier League clubs, and Neville revealed that he would use international breaks as an opportunity to talk to a number of England stars about a switch to United.
One such player was Gerrard, who dismissed the notion out of hand due to intense rivalry between the Red Devils and Liverpool.
Neville also revealed that he targeted Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer whilst away with the Three Lions.
“There were two or three times it happened, with England with me," he revealed on Sky Sports.
“I spoke to Alan Shearer during Euro 96, I had a conversation with him but I was more a junior at that time so I couldn’t have a serious conversation with him.
“Definitely with Wayne Rooney, had a little chat, he was a younger player so you can’t put too much pressure on.
“With Stevie [Gerrard] it was a full-on assault, let's get him out of there!
“To be fair Stevie’s answer was 'my family and me would never be able to go back to Liverpool ever again,’ it was a very short conversation.
“He was very loyal, Liverpool fans. John Terry probably got about ten minutes out of him and I got about 30 seconds.”
