From 'The Trial of Chicago 7' to 'Judas & the Black Messiah': The Overlapping Themes of This Year's Award Contenders

Two months later than usual, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 93rd Oscars. The honorees were revealed by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas in a virtual broadcast which had actually become the norm for The Academy even before the pandemic began a little over a year ago.

It was longer than usually, but at long last, the Oscar nominations are here. The field was led this year by Mank, scoring ten citations, with a number of films next in line. More to come, but for now, why not just get right to the good stuff, no? The movies deserve the stage. So, here you go…

Mark Dacascos (John Wick: Chapter 3), Janel Parrish (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise), and Celestino Cornielle (Bosch) have been cast in The Ray, an indie action thriller directed by Christopher Borrelli. Over the weekend, Aaron Sorkin landed a Golden Globe trophy for his screenplay for his recent Netflix feature, “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” The award is just one of many the filmmaker has been collecting over this awards season, culminating in what many believe to be some Oscar gold later this spring. And if you listen to the cast he put together for his period legal drama, all of this acclaim and recognition is well-deserved.

One of the most distressing scenes in Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7 is when Judge Julius Hoffman orders that Black Panther Bobby Seale be gagged and shackled during the 1969 proceedings. Seale's inhumane treatment — captured by a sketch artist at the time — has inspired a new exhibit by artist Karon Davis at Jeffrey Deitch gallery in New York (March 6 to April 24).

In director Shaka King's Judas and the Black Messiah, Dominique Fishback plays Deborah Johnson, the fiancee of Illinois Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) and mother to his son, who was born just weeks after the activist was assassinated in Chicago in 1969 at age 21.

The Cinema Audio Society is out with the nominees for its 57th annual CAS Awards for outstanding achievement in sound mixing. The seven categories spanning film and TV from 2020, with the virtual trophy show is set for Saturday, April 17.
