Four men have been arrested on suspicion of a hate-related sexual assault in a popular gay village. Police report that a woman was assaulted and threatened with a knife in the early hours of the morning.
Birmingham Live reports that the incident took place yesterday with the victim, who was in her 20's, subjected to a vicious assault, both verbally and physically. She was also allegedly threatened with a knife just before 5.30am on January 8 in Birmingham's Gay Village.
West Midlands Police say the alleged incident on Hurst Street was spotted by CCTV operators. A spokesperson said: "Our CCTV operators spotted the suspicious activity and when the crime was reported almost an hour later, they were able to back-track on the CCTV and direct officers to the suspects.
"The four, aged between 18 and 22, remain in custody for questioning. We do not tolerate hate crime in our city and have recently set up a new StreetWatch in Birmingham’s Gay Village – the first of its kind in the country."
The StreetWatch is a group of people who patrol around Hurst Street. Their aim is to create a safer village in direct response to community feedback to a survey during Pride.
The team is actively looking for more volunteers who want to make a difference and make the area safer. Anyone over 18 can volunteer as long as they are willing to give up two hours-per-month.
