Former ABC News Chief James Goldston to Head New Nonfiction Division at Candle Media

Nick Cave is creating a new installation and shop at London’s Dover Street market.The Bad Seeds singer is launching the unique space in the capital on March 17, which will also feature a whole new range of products from his online store ‘Cave Things’. The range includes apparel, books, homeware, prints and limited edition recordings, as well as new ‘Cave Things’ products exclusive to Dover Street Market.The brand will also re-introduce several sellout items from their archive and very first collection from 2020, including limited edition Polaroids and four picture discs. You can view many of the products here and some exclusive to the unique space below.Cave is set to make an appearance himself at the installation on March 19, where he will sign copies of his 2021 children’s book The Little Thing Is Sad.   According to a press release, the unique space was designed in close collaboration with Cave, with “personal touches throughout that reference Nick and his wife Susie’s home, including their inimitable use of playful pink.

Larry Jackson left Apple Music in September after seven years as the company’s global creative director, he kept quiet about his next move. But as an industry veteran with a deep rolodex and longstanding relationships with top music stars like Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Drake, his next venture was bound to be a very big one.    On Wednesday, Jackson announced the launch of Gamma, a multi-platform, multi-faceted business that will see him acquiring or joining forces with major artists and brands, with endeavors in music, films, merchandise, fashion, web3 and other areas. The company was cofounded with former Interscope CFO Ike Youssef; backers include Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries, Apple and indie film studio A24. The company is said to have $1 billion available in equity and debt.

BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James is to host a new Channel 4 reality series from the makers of hit series The Traitors.The game show, titled Rise And Fall, will see 16 members of the public, from all walks of life and ages, begin the game as equals but soon find themselves either in a position of power as a “ruler” or as part of the powerless as a “grafter”.The set-up will reflect real-life power dynamics as the grafters survive in basic conditions in a basement while the rulers live in a penthouse. Greg will oversee the action as the grafters work to complete a series of physically demanding games and challenges to build a cash prize fund only the rulers can win. The rulers must encourage the grafters to work harder, but if they push too hard they might find themselves toppled from power.

K.J. Yossman Former CBS News president David Rhodes has been appointed executive chairman of Sky News. In his new pan-European role, Rhodes will be responsible for Sky’s EMEA news services with a focus on commercial strategy in both the U.K. and Italy. Rhodes, who will report to Sky Studios CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz, has spent over 25 years in journalism, eight of which as president of CBS news. As well as leading Bloomberg Television he has also worked with the L.A. Times, Spotify and BCG among other organisations. In 2021 he joined Sky from News U.K. as group director of international business development.

J. Kim Murphy Walter Mirisch, a former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and an Oscar-winning producer for “In the Heat of the Night,” died Friday in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 101. Mirisch’s death was confirmed by a statement released by the Academy on Saturday afternoon. “The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is deeply saddened to hear of Walter’s passing,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in the statement. “Walter was a true visionary, both as a producer and as an industry leader. He had a powerful impact on the film community and the Academy, serving as our President and as an Academy governor for many years. His passion for filmmaking and the Academy never wavered, and he remained a dear friend and advisor. We send our love and support to his family during this difficult time.”

After months of cost cutting, write-downs, and getting pilloried among Hollywood natives for killing projects, the Warner Bros. Discovery chief showed off some new truculence, making the case that while his newly-merged company has been having a tough time, so too were others. “‘Last year was a year of restructuring,” said Zaslav, during a call with investors Thursday. “This year will be a year of building.” Over the course of an hour, Zasalv and Gunnar Wiedenfels, Warner’s chief financial officer, made the case that their company was just as well-equipped as any of its rivals — perhaps even more so — to withstand a stormy era during which media companies are pressed to grow their streaming operations but maintain profitability. Zaslav elbowed Netflix for releasing all of the episodes for a program’s cycle all at once; suggested that a move to launch new “Lord of the Rings” movies would take away some of the momentum that Amazon had enjoyed from its launch of a series based on the novels; and told listeners Warner Bros. Discovery could launch an ad-supported streaming service without having to buy an outside asset, as Fox Corp. and Paramount Global had. “We can create a Tubi or a Pluto without having to buy anybody,” he boasted.

Court is back in session for Judge Greg Mathis as the TV personality has found a new home with Allen Media Group.The Byron Allen-owned media giant has given a “firm go” for the production and launches of its 72nd and newest HD television series “Mathis Court with Judge Mathis.” The new court series is a daily one-hour strip for fall 2023, available to broadcast television stations, as well as global network, cable and digital distribution platforms.For 24 consecutive seasons, Warner Bros./Telepictures produced and distributed “Judge Mathis,” the second longest-running court show in continued production with the same host, behind only “Judge Judy.” The series is slated to end with Season 24. “Judge Mathis” won a Daytime Emmy in 2018 for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program, as well as the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding News, Talk or Information Series in 2004.

Goldston will serve as president of the new division, which will produce scripted and nonscripted features and series “inspired by true stories,” according to Candle. Goldston spent 18 years at ABC News, including seven years as president, before exiting in 2021. overseeing all aspects of America’s number one news division, including #1 rated “Good Morning America” and “World News with David Muir.” He also led ABC News into the streaming era with a series of successful podcast and documentary projects for Hulu and Disney+, including “The Dropout,” produced by Rebecca Jarvis and her team, which became a successful podcast, documentary and Emmy-award winning scripted series for Hulu, and John’s Ridley’s “Let it Fall,” a duPont-Columbia Award-winning documentary on the LA riots. His teams have won five Edward R. Murrow Awards for Overall Excellence, and numerous other prestigious honors in journalism, including a Peabody, duPont-Columbia, and Emmy awards.

ABC News Studios have released a trailer for a forthcoming documentary called Rap Trap: Hip-Hop on Trial. Premiering February 23 on Hulu, the film will focus on the trials of Young Thug and Gunna within the broader indictment targeting their YSL crew.

Joy Division-themed bar in Manchester has divided opinion across social media.The bar, which has opened today (February 17) in the Northern Quarter of the band’s hometown, features a mural of late frontman Ian Curtis in the corner and a green neon ‘Unknown Pleasures’ sign – in reference to their landmark 1979 debut – on the wall. Described by its owners as “a love letter to Manchester music” by its own, it is serving Japanese fusion dishes with ‘Manchester vibes’.

Stormzy and Nick Cave were among the famous figures who attended Vivienne Westwood’s funeral yesterday (February 16).The legendary British fashion designer and environmental activist died “peacefully” in Clapham, south London on December 29, 2022. She was 81 years old.As BBC News reports, the memorial service for Westwood was held at Southwark Cathedral.

A new bar in the Northern Quarter features an Ian Curtis mural by the same artist that had his work sensationally painted over last year. Disorder, which has been inspired by the music of Joy Division and is opening this weekend, commissioned street artist Akse P19 to paint the mural.
