Alex Iwobi gets AFCON red card just five minutes after coming off bench for Nigeria
Everton's Alex Iwobi topped off a disappointing evening for Nigeria when he was given his marching order five minutes after coming on.The Super Eagles were dumped out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday evening by Tunisia. And after going a goal down, Nigeria's gaffer, Augustine Eguavoen, gambled on sending the Everton frontman onto the pitch to try and keep Nigeria's AFCON hopes alive. It was a bold call from Eguavoen as he hooked Leicester City's Kelechi Iheanacho for the former Arsenal man.But five minutes after his introduction to the pitch, Iwobi was given his marching orders.Iwobi had initially received the ball, but a poor first touch saw him overstretch to regain control. However, when stretching to hook the ball back, Iwobi had raked his studs down the inside of his markers leg, who immediately hit the deck. The Everton man was flashed a yellow card, but a VAR review saw the referee head over to the pitch side monitor to reconsider his decision. And after viewing the challenge in slow motion, Iwobi's yellow card was rescinded and he was given a red. Was the red card harsh on Iwobi? Let us know in the comments section "Think the slow-mo has done for him there - real time it’s a just a coming together as he’s trying to protect the ball," one fan tweeted.Another fumed: "Shouldn’t even be on the pitch in the first place! Better players in Nigeria who should be getting a chance! Joke decision by Eguavoen.""They’re taking the p***, I could understand a yellow but wtf kinda call is that," a third added. And a fourth tweeted: "Didn’t think it could get worse than the Prem…"
