Focus Features Acquires Willem Dafoe Thriller ‘Inside’, Sets Q1 2023 Release

Holly Jones Brazilian film editor, screenwriter and director Bruno Carboni tells a merged tale of human disconnection in “The Accident” (“O Acidente”), sharing an exclusive first-look trailer with Variety as the film begins to advance on the festival circuit.  Completed within the framework of the 2018 Torino Film Script Lab, Carboni’s reflective first feature has debuted in competition alongside seven other projects, including Eduardo Cassanova’s “La Piedad” and Carlos Lechuga’s “Vicenta B” at the 32nd Annual Cine Ceará in Fortaleza, Brazil, which wraps today. It is also screening at the Festival do Rio and has just been selected for the Tallinn Black Nights First Feature Competition.

Bruce Willis and John Travolta will appear as rivals in their new action movie "Paradise City." In the film's trailer, which was released Wednesday, Willis plays a bounty hunter who is getting a little too old for the job but agrees to take on the extremely difficult and dangerous assignment to take down a crime lord in Hawaii, played by Travolta.  After Willis’ character is thought to have died on the job, his son, played by Blake Jenner, teams up with his dad’s former partner, Stephen Dorff, to get revenge on those they believe carried out the killing.Their task is made all the more difficult because they still have to deal with Travolta’s character. This is the first time Travolta and Willis have worked together since first pairing up in 1994 for the Quentin Tarantino classic "Pulp Fiction." Travolta played a hitman in the film, and Willis played an aging boxer who killed Travolta’s character.They played two of the film's three protagonists.

Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer Hong Chau has joined the cast of the anticipated new film from “The Favourite” and “The Lobster” director Yorgos Lanthimos. Chau, who has been prolific in recent years, joins a stacked ensemble featuring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley. Plot details are (frustratingly) under wraps from the Greek master of subversion, who has also given us “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “Dogtooth.” Lanthimos directs from a script he wrote with Efthimis Filippou (reuniting after both “Lobster” and “Sacred Deer”). Searchlight Pictures is financing and distributing the project with Element Pictures and Film4. Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element, Kasia Malipan and Lanthimos are producing. Principal photography begins this month in Chau’s native New Orleans.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is set to release a new double album, “Hans Zimmer Live,” in 2023. Sony Classical announced the news today as it previewed the first single(s), the three-part “Last Samurai Suite.” Zimmer’s new album features reimagined arrangements of his most iconic pieces. Among those scores getting new treatments are “The Lion King,” “The Dark Knight,” “Dunkirk” “Gladiator” and “Inception.”

Lionsgate has just dated three theatrical release for next year: the Sebastian Maniscalco inspired biopic About My Father starring the comedian and Robert De Niro for Memorial Day weekend May 26; the untitled Adele Lim comedy on June 23 and The Expendables 4 for Sept. 22.

EXCLUSIVE: Labid Aziz’sPeople of Culture Studios (PoC Studios), has picked up North American distribution rights to Kim Bass’s comedy A Snowy Day in Oakland, and will open the film nationwide in theaters over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend, Jan. 13, 2023. The movie is the debut theatrical release for PoC Studios. 

Production has wrapped on The Blind, a biopic of Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson with a theatrical release date slated for Sept. 22, 2023 as distribution plans are being finalized.

Focus Features acquired the Willem Dafoe-starring thriller “Inside” this week. The film is now slated for release next March.“Inside” stars Dafoe as Nemo, an art thief trapped in a New York penthouse after a heist doesn’t go as planned.

Apple Original Films has dated the run-from-slavery thriller Emancipation for a December 2 theatrical opening, followed by a December 9 release on its Apple TV+ streaming site. This follows the film’s first showing in DC on Saturday, with star Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua (who flew in from Italy, where he and Denzel Washington are shooting a third Equalizer film) discussed the fact-based film in a screening orchestrated by Apple and NAACP during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Legislative Conference.

Apple held its first showing today of Emancipation, the Antoine Fuqua-directed thriller that stars Will Smith an enslaved man who, after recovering from a whipping that nearly killed him, braved the swamps of Louisiana armed with only his wits, to escape cold-blooded slave hunters and be free.

One of the more famously troubled projects in recent memory, Robert Eggers’ re-imagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 classic “Nosferatu,” is finally happening, this time with a new backer, TheWrap can confirm.Focus Features is now behind the project, with Jeff Robinov, John Graham, Robert Eggers, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus producing.

Russ Weakland After a stop in Venice earlier this month, Walter Hill’s latest film, “Dead for a Dollar,” headed west for the U.S. premiere. The prolific filmmaker of such movies as “The Warriors,” “48 Hrs.,” “Streets of Rage” and “Red Heat,” was the talk of the evening on Wednesday at the Directors Guild Theater in Los Angeles. The film’s stars Willem Dafoe, Christoph Waltz, Benjamin Bratt and Warren Burke praised the writer-director, already renowned for his revival of the Western genre, for making another Western. Speaking candidly, Dafoe, who last worked with Hill in 1991 on “Streets of Rage,” described the director as a “no-nonsense kind of guy.”
