Final Oscar Voting Begins; Dwayne Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson Among First Announced Presenters

Zack Sharf Digital News Director The highlight of Brendan Fraser’s Oscars night was winning the Academy Award for best actor thanks to his acclaimed performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” but perhaps in second place was a long overdue reunion with megastar Dwayne Johnson. The two actors starred together nearly 22 years ago in “The Mummy Returns,” the sequel to Fraser’s 1999 blockbuster “The Mummy” that marked Johnson’s film acting debut in Hollywood. “Very cool full circle moment here with my long time buddy Brendan Fraser and his sons,” Johnson wrote on Instagram along with a video of the two actors reuniting backstage at the 2023 Oscars. “My very first film of my Hollywood career was ‘The Mummy Returns,’ which Brendan was the star. Lots of critics and cynics betting against me at that time, but Brendan welcomed me with open arms and was very supportive. I never forget kind people.”

Carolyn Hinds As Michael B. Jordan stepped back into the role of Adonis Creed for “Creed III,” he also stepped into the directing ring for the first time. Also returning for the latest installment is cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau, who was tasked with framing the film’s epic boxing matches. Together, Jordan and Morgenthau worked to create the franchise’s most visually unique chapter to date. Bookending the film are two brutal boxing matches that serve as pivotal moments in Adonis’s life and professional career — the first, Creed’s retirement fight in South Africa, and the last, his face-off against former childhood friend Damian “Dame” Anderson (Jonathan Majors) in Los Angeles. Those particular sequences are intended to show that there is more to the fights and the athletes than meets the eye. For Adonis, being in the ring gives him the opportunity to lay his demons to rest and find peace in his life.

Angela Bassett did not reign victorious like her character Queen Ramonda from the "Black Panther" franchise at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday. Bassett was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category, but the award was given to Jamie Lee Curtis for her portrayal of Deirdre Beaubeirdre in the critically acclaimed, and Academy Award Best Picture winner, "Everything Everywhere All at Once." During the ceremony, cameras were focused on all five nominees as presenters Ariana DeBose and Troy Kotsur announced Curtis' name, much to her shock.
