When Warner Bros. released the first photos of Ryan Gosling as Ken in June of last year– bare-chested, aggressively spray-tanned, and complete with platinum blonde hair and personalized underwear — fans were amazed by his transformation for his role as Barbie’s boyfriend in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming “Barbie” film.
Now, in a funny twist, Mattel has released a new version of the Barbie Ken doll inspired by Gosling’s anticipated portrayal, and fans are divided over whether the doll is an accurate depiction of the actor. On June 1, the toy company unveiled the new collection of dolls based on the actors in the film, including two iterations of Gosling’s Ken. In one, he wears a matching pink-and-green striped beach set, alongside a blue surfboard prop.
In the other, he wears the viral skin-baring denim set and monogrammed underwear that Gosling wears in one of the very first photos released from the film. However, despite the thoughtful details, some fans have been less than pleased with the doll. “I only bought this Ken doll because the hair is advertised as ‘snowcat white’ but this is far from it,” one reviewer wrote on Amazon.

It’s summer movie season and there’s a big box office battle brewing in July.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director When it came to designing and creating the costumes for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie, the focus was put far more on Margot Robbie’s eponymous doll than it was on Ryan Gosling’s Ken. As the film’s costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, recently told Vogue UK, “No one cares about Ken, everybody just wants to play with Barbie. He matches Barbie and changes too but he has very, very, many less [clothes] options.” Durran, who won an Oscar for her costume designs on Gerwig’s “Little Women” adaptation, said colorful ’80s sportswear was the key to Ken’s looks in the movie. “Retro sportswear is one area where we did a lot of shopping for Ken,” Durran said. “He is sporty. That’s his main thing. We had buyers in America that went to dealers and imported it for us because we needed so much of it.”

Last year, while Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” was in production, Ryan Gosling promised the press that he would bring the “ken-ergy” in his performance as Barbie’s plastic beaux. And based on the trailer for the film so far, Gosling certainly brings that “ken-ergy” (whatever that is).
Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” is one of the movie events of the summer for several reasons. Reason #1: it squares off again Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” at the box office on its opening weekend; who wins there may also be 2023’s biggest summer film.
Ryan Gosling has defended his casting in the highly anticipated Barbie movie, saying: “If people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with.” The actor, 42, stars alongside Margot Robbie in the live-action film based on the famous Mattel doll, from Oscar-nominated actress and director Greta Gerwig. After he was cast in the role, fans on social media suggested Ryan was too old to play Barbie’s boyfriend. Responding to the criticism, Ryan told British GQ: “I would say if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Ryan Gosling is telling off his “Barbie” critics who claim he’s too old to play Ken. Some younger “Barbie” fans have stormed social media after each photo and trailer drop for the movie to decry the casting of 42-year-old Gosling as Ken. A social media debate over Gosling’s age has even broken out among different generations of Barbie fans, as summarized earlier this year by the New York Post (in a story aptly titled “Gen Z ‘Barbie’ Fans Slammed for Calling Ryan Gosling Too ‘Old’ to Play Ken”). What does Gosling think of the age criticism being lobbied against him? “I would say, you know, if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with,” he recently told GQ magazine for a cover story.
