The 2023 Cannes Film Festival ends tomorrow, but awards for the fest start today, at least in the Un Certain Regard category. With John C.

Only nine directors have ever won the Palme d’Or twice. Francis Ford Coppola did it in the ’70s with The Conversation and Apocalypse Now. Ruben Östlund joined the club last year after following The Square with Triangle of Sadness. But this year, there is a very real possibility that, at 86, Ken Loach may go above and beyond that by winning a third Palme for his new film, The Old Oak. Loach first won in 2006 with the historical Irish drama The Wind That Shakes the Barley, then doubled up in 2016 with I, Daniel Blake, a caustic study of Britain’s healthcare crisis. After that came Sorry, We Missed You, a no-less withering look at the punitive gig economy. Like the latter two films, The Old Oak is set in the North East of England and completes an unofficial trilogy, this time with a slightly more optimistic bent. Like all of Loach’s output since 1996, it was written by Paul Laverty, and the pair sat down with Damon Wise to discuss the film’s themes of humanity and social responsibility.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Alice Rohrwacher is in the Cannes competition for the third time with “La Chimera,” in which “The Crown” star Josh O’Connor plays a young British archeologist named Arthur who gets involved in an international network of stolen Etruscan artifacts during the 1980s. For Rohrwacher, the film is connected to growing up in Umbria, once the center of the Etruscan civilization. But it’s also the final piece of a triptych on a territory that she started with her previous Cannes entries: “The Wonders” and “Happy as Lazzaro.” Three works that, as she has put it, pose a central question: “What to do with the past?”

A drag queen has said they were "honoured" to design the jaw-dropping orange wedding dress that Coronation Street's Gemma Winter will wear for her wedding to Chesney Brown next week.The gown, which took more than 200 hours to make, was co-designed by drag queen and fashion designer Liquorice Black, whose designs have already featured on the likes of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Liquorice Black worked in conjunction with Coronation Street's Head of Costume, Alex Hatzar, and actress Dolly-Rose Campbell, who plays Gemma, to create the perfect dress.The 2-metre wide dress is complete with 125-metres of fairy lights, 10,000 stones and a 7-metre train was crafted at Liquorice Black’s studio in Manchester.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Beta Cinema has closed further presales for “The Offing,” which will star Helena Bonham Carter, and will be directed by Jessica Hobbs, an Emmy Award-winner for “The Crown.” New deals include Spain (Beta Fiction), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo), Switzerland (Pathé Films), former Yugoslavia (Discovery) and the Middle East (Front Row). CineSky Pictures has picked up worldwide airline rights. A multi-territory deal with Curzon, Cineart and Madman for U.K./Ireland, Benelux and Australia/New Zealand was revealed in April. “The Offing,” which is based on the novel by Benjamin Myers, is set on the northeast English coast shortly after World War II. It tells the story of shy, 16-year-old Robert, and the hard-drinking, foul-mouthed, bohemian recluse Dulcie Piper, played by Bonham Carter, and their unlikely friendship.

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up rights to the animated feature They Shot the Piano Player for the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Scandinavia, India, the Middle East, Turkey, Southeast Asia (excluding Taiwan and South Korea) and airlines within the aforementioned territories. The film from Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, two of the directors behind the Oscar-nominated animated feature Chico and Rita, is set up for a fall awards push from SPC.

Rachel Weisz may be proud of her husband, Daniel Craig, for his 15-year tenure as James Bond for five installments of the action franchise, but she is not afraid to admit that she is pleased his time as the savvy British spy is over. The actor began his time as Bond when he took over Pierce Brosnan in time for 2006's Casino Royale.

To be eligible for the Academy Awards’ best picture category, a film must have a minimum 40-minute runtime. Almodóvar’s movie runs 31 minutes. With those extra nine minutes, we could also highlight the worthiness of actors Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and the project’s artisan categories. But for his second English language endeavor, coming three years after “The Human Voice” with Tilda Swinton, the Spanish auteur’s sensibilities are never lacking. His new Spanish Western stands proudly next to some of his most audacious movies such as “Talk to Her” and “Volver.”

ITV soap watched as Faye was left stunned after discovering ex Jackson and her estranged daughter Miley (Frankie-Jae Simmonds) had moved back to the UK. Naman Ramachandran British singer-songwriter Craig David (“22”) and singer and stage actor Beverley Knight (“Sister Act”) will headline the Windrush 75 celebration at London’s Royal Albert Hall on June 9. The event is being curated and hosted by DJ and radio presenter Trevor Nelson. The Windrush generation came to the U.K. from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971. The ship MV Empire Windrush had arrived in Tilbury on June 22, 1948, bringing workers from the Caribbean to help address a post-war labor shortage in the U.K. The concert will aim to capture the breadth of musical influence which the Windrush generation has had on British culture over the last 75 years, with performances including R&B group Loose Ends’ “Hangin’ on a String,” G-folk’ pioneer Hak Baker’s “Windrush Baby” and David’s “Fill Me In,” as well as renditions of classic tracks like Lord Kitchener’s “London is the Place for Me,” Bob Marley’s “Is this Love,” and Goldie’s “Inner City Life.”

The BAFTA TV Awards made a welcome return to our TV screens, with dozens of stars gathering to celebrate the most prestigious awards in British television.The annual awards bash tonight, 14 May, was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan and took place at The Royal Festival Hall in London. As most awards ceremonies are, the evening was filled with laughter, tears and glamorous red carpet looks, and some TV stars even walked away with two awards.

The leading actress BAFTA has been given to Kate Winslet for her performance in I Am Ruth, which sees a mother and daughter work through emotional turmoil.The 47-year-old actress: “[I am] guaranteed to be the one of the night to cry, I can’t see...” She added that “small British television dramas can be mighty” and mental health stories such as this one “need to be heard”. She said: “If I could break it in half, I would give the other half to my daughter Mia Threapleton, we did this together, kiddo.” As she said the words, the camera cut to her daughter, who cried as she put her hands to her mouth, blew her mother some kisses, and mouthed the words: "I love you." Kate went on to praise her daughter, Mia, as she said, honestly: "There were days when it was agony for her to dig as deeply as she did, into very frightening emotional territory, sometimes - it took my breath away." She continued: "I Am Ruth was made for parents and their children.

Kate Winslet joined daughter and co-star Mia Threapleton at the British Academy Television Awards at London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday. The Hollywood actress, 47, who is nominated for Best Actress for drama I Am Ruth, in which she starred alongside her daughter, 22, slipped into a gorgeous black evening dress for the event.  She looked sensational in the little black number which featured an asymmetrical highneck design and hugged every inch of her figure.

British Academy Television Awards on Sunday afternoon, as they prepared to find out who had won Britain's most-coveted TV awards in a glittering ceremony hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan. From Hollywood royalty like Kate Winslet to Strictly stars Claudia Winkleman and Motsi Mabuse, the red carpet provided many standout fashion moments, with nominees and presenters alike pulling out all the stops for the biggest night in television. The event marks the second year in a row that Kate has been nominated for the best actress award at the TV BAFTAs, and she'll be competing against the likes of Billie Piper, Sarah Lancashire and Imelda Staunton, who all turned heads as they made their arrival outside London's Southbank Centre.

Kate Winslet has won the coveted Leading Actress gong at the BAFTA TV Awards for her performance in Channel 4’s I Am Ruth. The Mare of Easttown star has won three BAFTA Film Awards during a stellar career but this is her first TV win.
