We need answers! The first season of Severance left fans with a lot of questions that need resolutions in the show’s second season. Spoilers for season 1 ahead.
The Apple TV+ show revolves around a team of employees at Lumon Industries, who all agreed to undergo a surgical procedure — called a “severance” — that separates their work lives from their personal lives. Their work life is their “innie” persona and outside of their job, they are referred to as “outies.” One of the employees, Mark (Adam Scott), starts to get suspicious of the company after his coworker, Petey, mysteriously disappears and he earns a promotion in his department, Macro Data Refinement (MDR).
In his new role, he meets Helly (played by Britt Lower) who recently had the surgery, which wiped her memories. While outside of work, Petey runs into Mark, who has no memory of him at the time. After seeing Petey a few times, Mark finds out from his former coworker that he was psychologically tortured, which leads to his interest in potentially reversing the procedure. However, Petey ultimately dies as a result of the surgery.
Throughout the first season, Mark teams up with three of his MDR coworkers, including Helly, to uncover a conspiracy going on with the severance surgeries. Helly wishes to leave the company and attempts to escape in order to regain her memories. In the finale, Helly — and Severance viewers — learn that she is the daughter of the company’s CEO, James Eagen (Michael Siberry).
Alongside Scott and Lower, the psychological thriller also stars Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, John Turturro, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman and Michael Chernus. The show, created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller, was nominated for 14

A rising star! Stephanie Hsu earned her first Oscar nomination for her performance in the 2022 comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Everything Everywhere All At Once announced itself this morning as a serious Oscar threat with 11 nominations, topping off with best picture. That includes performing noms for Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan. The film also drew noms for costume, original score, original screenplay, best original song, film editing, and directing for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
In a nutshell the brilliantly hilarious, pertinent, and wickedly smart new movie, You People is in some ways a new age Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, that landmark 1967 Tracy-Hepburn-Poitier Oscar winning comedy about the effect an interracial relationship has on the parents of the young couple. Of course back then it was a major social issue and even had trouble booking some southern theatres. The idea was switched in a Bernie Mac/Ashton Kutcher 2005 remake that all those years later did not have the same impact. With anti-semitism and racism back on the rise in 2023 America however the concept of an interracial/interfaith marriage, Black and White, Jew and Muslim, could not be more timely or needed, and in co-star Jonah Hill’s and director Kenya Barris’ whipsmart screenplay is also a knock-you-out-of- your-seat laugh riot. Ironically I saw it this week at its World Premiere at the same Westwood Village theatre where I saw Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner all those years ago. With a packed house the laughter was so continuous and loud for You People it was hard to hear a lot of the lines. When was the last time that happened?
