Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre has outlined why Erik ten Hag should be aiming for the title next season.
The club finished sixth in the season just gone, 13 points away from the top four as United endured their worst Premier League record in history. The main aim for United next season will be to finish in a Champions League spot.
Ten Hag is expected to oversee a squad overhaul this summer with a number of names already out of the door upon the expiration of their contracts. More are thought to follow with the club targeting new recruits for a long-term rebuild.

However, former United defender and title-winner Silvestre told Sky Sports that the club needs to adopt a mindset that targets the league title from this summer onwards. He explained: “To be honest, you have to aim for the top spot, I know it’s not realistic but you have to aim as high as possible.
“You need to put in your head that you’re challenging Manchester City and Liverpool. It might be difficult but that’s the only way to go about it and change the mentality.”
Silvestre identified how it will be like a new start for the current crop of United players when they return from holiday, with a new manager at the helm. He said: “It has to be (different) because there is a change of manager, the staff, some players have left the club and there will be some new faces.
“So it will be a new beginning, fresh start and the dynamic will be completely different. It will be positive in the beginning, hopefully the confidence will grow with the good results.”
