Former Liverpool and England midfielder John Barnes has called on Manchester United to back incoming manager Erik ten Hag in this summer's transfer window, but has warned them that they should not spend £100million to sign Frenkie de Jong.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News last week, United are interested in the Barcelona midfielder and are weighing up a £75million move for his services. De Jong worked with Ten Hag during his time at Ajax and the duo are understood to have retained a strong relationship.
Ten Hag has reached out to the Dutchman's agent and is keen to add him to his midfield options at Old Trafford. United are set to prioritise the addition of a new central-midfielder this summer and could sign at least two.

"Despite Barcelona reportedly upping the price of Frenkie De Jong, Manchester United will still be able to afford the player, but not at all costs," Barnes told BonusCodeBets. "Although, if Barcelona want £100million, then maybe not.
"The price won't be unreasonable; Barcelona could put it up a little bit more but Manchester United will be able to afford it. Especially as they'll lose Paul Pogba and his salary, amongst other players.
