Erik ten Hag has explained what role Benni McCarthy will have at Manchester United after his surprise appointment this week.
While United played Atletico Madrid in Oslo, Norway, it emerged that former Porto and Blackburn striker McCarthy was the latest addition to Ten Hag's backroom staff. McCarthy has joined United as a striker's coach and he's a boyhood fan of the club.
McCarthy has joined Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren on Ten Hag's backroom staff, while the Dutchman has also kept Eric Ramsay at the club, who is United's set-piece coach. Richard Hartis and Craig Mawson are still the goalkeeping coaches.

Ten Hag was asked about the appointment of McCarthy on Sunday evening and he explained the South African's role.
"There was still one place in our coaching staff that I wanted to fill in," Ten Hag told MUTV.
"I wanted someone with a different voice and Benni has the experience, he was a manager, he was a coach at a professional level and he was a former striker, a really successful striker as well. He will focus on the positioning and attacking stuff.
"It won’t only be the strikers, it will be the integration of full-backs and midfielders because our way of play has to be dynamic."
McCarthy was at Old Trafford for United's final pre-season match against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.
