Emmerdale fans have been left distracted after spotting a very familiar face popping up in new BBC One drama The Responder. As viewers tuned in to watch the gripping BBC series, which is led by actor Martin Freeman, they took to social media to ask where they’d seen the character of Barry before.
While others quickly worked out they recognised actor Mark Womack for his role as Emmerdale’s menacing police officer DI Mark Malone. The corrupt cop terrorised Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) and Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) before being murdered by Dawn in an act of self-defence in August 2020. After watching scenes featuring Mark, 61, as one of drug dealer Carl’s henchmen, viewers took to social media to point out the familiar face.

One said: “I’ve only clocked on just now that this show features the corrupt copper Malone who was in Emmerdale. I swear I knew him from somewhere #TheResponder.” A second said: “DI Malone in #TheResponder.” As a third asked their followers: “Hang on isn’t that Malone from Emmerdale? #TheResponder.” Of course, Malone isn’t the only part acclaimed actor Mark has played on the small screen over the course of his successful career. The star, who is separated from his wife, ex-EastEnders actress Samantha Womack, is probably best known for his role as DC Mark Callaghan in Liverpool 1.
He’s also had key roles in Murphy’s Law, Merseybeat and Silent Witness. And although Malone met his end in the summer of 2020, the villain is still a central part of the soap. That’s because his body is yet to be discovered as it remains hidden in the grounds of Home Farm.
