Elizabeth Banks Calls Out Hollywood's Double Industry While Reflecting on 'Charlie's Angels'

Issa Rae has called out the Hollywood movie industry for protecting Ezra Miller despite their controversial behaviour. The Justice League actor, who uses they/them pronouns, has been involved in a string of controversies, legal issues and run-ins with the police this year, but Warner Bros. still intends to release their standalone superhero movie The Flash next June.

Ezra Miller‘s string of erratic behavior over the past couple of years appears to be over, with the actor currently seeking treatment for “complex mental health issues.” And while it remains unclear if Miller redeems themselves enough to return to full-time acting —Miller uses they/them pronouns— it does look like Warner Bros. will stay the course with their release of “The Flash” next June.

Zack Sharf Issa Rae said in a recent interview with Elle Magazine that everything going on with Ezra Miller represents a “microcosm of Hollywood,” most notably how the industry continues to protect offenders. Miller was arrested twice in Hawaii this year, once for disorderly conduct and harassment, and they were also cited in Vermont with felony burglary. Back in 2020, Miller was seen in a video recording choking a woman outside of a bar in Iceland. Despite all of these incidents, the Miller-led comic book tentpole “The Flash” is still set for release in June 2023 from Warner Bros., with Miller even recently filming reshoots for the movie. “While I don’t support people jumping to immediate conclusions and I think it’s entirely fair for investigations to happen, I think it’s extremely important to, like the mantra says, ‘Listen to women,’” Rae told Elle magazine. “I’m gonna be real, the stuff that’s happening with Ezra Miller is, to me, a microcosm of Hollywood. There was a story around ‘Charlie’s Angels’ that I was creating some feminist manifesto. I was just making an action movie.” The “Pitch Perfect 2” director added that she “would’ve liked to have made ‘Mission: Impossible,’ but women aren’t directing ‘Mission: Impossible.’ I was able to direct an action movie, frankly, because it starred women and I’m a female director, and that is the confine right now in Hollywood.”
