The 2022 Edinburgh Festival is now in its final week, with a packed programme of great theatre, comedy, cabaret, music, musicals, opera, dance, physical theatre, film, visual art, talks, debates and spoken word.CMU’s sister media ThreeWeeks has been covering it all throughout the month.

Making its European premiere, Sally El Hosaini’s The Swimmers has been set as the opening film of the 18th Zurich Film Festival. Based on the inspirational true-life story of the Mardini sisters, it will screen on September 22 at Zurich’s Convention Center. It will earlier world premiere as the opening night gala presentation in Toronto.

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent Co-organized with CAA Media Finance, a new San Sebastian Festival Creative Investors’ Conference will see many of the good and great of the international film business descend on September’s fest edition to be pitched 10 higher-budget Spanish movies by their producers.  The Conference will run Sept.19-20. In a cosmopolitan lineup, titles pitched include international co-productions such as “Whalemen (At the Ends of the Earth)” from “Everest” director Baltasar Kormákur as well as the latest from “Amama” helmer Asier Altuna and “Raqa,” from Gerardo Herrero, an Academy Award wining producer for “The Secret in Their Eyes.”

Charlotte Gainsbourg is set to be honored at this year’s Zurich Film Festival with the Golden Eye award. Gainsbourg will be presented with the award on September 26 at the festival and the presentation will be followed by the world premiere of her latest film The Almond and the Seahorse, starring Rebel Wilson.

This is getting Pasta joke.x”.The runner-up joke for 2022 was from Mark Simmons, which went: “Did you know, if you get pregnant in the Amazon, it’s next day delivery?”Olaf Falafel had two jokes in the Top 10, including: “My attempts to combine nitrous oxide and Oxo cubes made me a laughing stock,” at three, and: “I spent the whole morning building a time machine, so that’s four hours of my life that I’m definitely getting back,” at six.“This is Dave’s first Joke of the Fringe award in three years, and the quality of the submissions has been incredibly strong,” said Dave’s channel director Cherie Cunningham (via The Guardian). “It’s a fantastic top 10 full of newcomers and comedy veterans, and it’s a delight to crown Masai Graham as winner once more.”Other comedians that are on the list include Sophie Duker, Tim Vine and Hannah Fairweather, with women only making up two out of all the entries in total.This year’s Fringe has attracted some controversy after comedian Jerry Sadowitz had his show cancelled.

An Edinburgh pub has issued a sharp response to a bad review from an unhappy tourist who insulted its staff. The Virginia native stated that their wedding party of 12 had been denied seating at the Rose Street Brewery, Edinburgh Live reports..

Carson Burton Sam Mendes will receive the Ebert Director Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey announced Tuesday.The award, which recognizes filmmakers who have exemplified greatness in their careers, was named after legendary film critic Roger Ebert and is an evolution of the festival’s Roger Ebert Golden Thumb Award. Past recipients of the award include Denis Villeneuve, Chloé Zhao and Taika Waititi.
