She's one of Albert Square's most iconic residents. There are not many people who do not remember the legendary character of Cindy Beale. But despite cutting her teeth on the BBC 1 soap EastEnders, the actress who played Cindy, Michelle Collins, has revealed that she's 'not sure' the soap - on which ratings hit an all time low last year - has a future. "I hope it survives for the sake of all those actors," says 59 year old Michelle.
But, "I'm not sure" she adds. She also explains why the show may be having such a tough time. "A lot of shows have suffered during the pandemic," she says.
"But I think it's hard for EastEnders to keep up the standard of writing on a show that airs five days a week." The actress, who is now living with partner Mike Davison in London, also candidly reveals that while she has nothing but happy memories of her time on the soap, she is glad a return is not possible for Cindy.
"I’m pleased that they killed Cindy off because it meant I couldn’t ever go back," she says. She also confesses that she owes much of her success to EastEnders. Michele says, "With TV channels like Gold, it means people still know who Cindy is.
So, she’s still around. If it wasn’t for EastEnders I probably wouldn’t be where I am today." Adding: "I look back at EastEnders in a very positive way." And while she's glad the possibility of a return is ruled out for her, she is still close to many of her former co-stars, Adam Woodyatt who played her on screen husband Ian Beale particularly. She reveals she was a great source of support to her when she lost her beloved mother recently.
