EastEnders fans already know that the set has had a huge overhaul after undergoing a reconstruction. And on Monday March 8, EastEnders characters Sharon Watts, played by Letitia Dean, and Martin Fowler, played by James Bye, made an on-air comment, nodding to the fact the set has had a few changes. Moments after Monday's episode began with the shots of the new Albert Square, viewers saw Sharon's flat as she and Martin were walking together in the opening scene.
Sharon was seen walking out of her front gate alongside Martin, before Letitia Dean's character stopped to ask if he liked her new coat. "It just looks the same as the old one," Martin replied, with fans noticing his obvious reference to the new set. Sharon went on to respond by saying: "Oi, this is quality. It will last years!" Martin continued to make a joke about the new Walford, as he added that at least Sharon's coat didn't have "that funny smell anymore". It was reported that the set's big transformation cost the soap a whopping £87 million in all.
The process faced multiple delays along the way before it was first seen on our TV screens on Monday. But this week the set will be on full display as fans tune in to watch the extensive chase scene with serial killer Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith). It comes after Sharon was heartbroken when Jada Lennox (Kelsey Calladine-Smiths ) disappeared with Alyssa Lennox and turned her back on her brother Zack Hudson (James Farrar).
