Hollyoaks may pride itself on being a teen soap that deals with the issues that face today’s young people, but it also has a history of casting excellent actors who've had long and interesting careers already. As the spring trailer launched today, fans were excited to see the addition of Glynis Barber as gangster Norma. She’s a soapland favourite having played Glenda Mitchell in EastEnders from 2010-2017.
Her character got into all sorts of scrapes, as Roxy (Rita Simons) and Ronnie’s (Samantha Womack) mum and villain Archie Mitchell’s ex, played by Larry Lamb. And by landing the role in Hollyoaks, the actress is scoring a soap hat-trick, as she was also DCI Barraclough in Emmerdale in 2016, and who bedded Tom King as a honeytrap. Her new roles promises to be just as exciting. A show insider said that Norma will arrive in the village driving a hearse.Talking to the Daily Star, they said: “Trouble is heading to Hollyoaks. “Norma is out for blood and she arrives in the village driving a hearse and demanding to know who has been stealing her money.” Glynis has also spoken of being thrilled about landing the role.
“I’m really excited to be playing Norma as she’s an amazing character. Formidable, complex and taking on the men and leaving them quaking in their boots. The team and cast at Hollyoaks have been incredibly welcoming and I can’t wait to get my teeth into the character”. Of course Glynis is also very well known for playing the iconic role of Lady Harriet Makepeace in eighties cop show Dempsey & Makepeace, where she met her husband, American actor Michael Brandon.
