EastEnders viewers have been teased with the arrival of Albert Square's latest hunk Ravi Gulati, played by Aaron Thiara. First seen alongside Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) in prison, Ravi headed straight to Walford after being released, where it soon unfolded that he is the son of Ranveer Gulati (Anil Goutam), the business partner of the Panesars.
After the patriarch of the Gulati family blackmails Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal), upcoming episodes will see Ravi discovering his father's lifeless body after an altercation with Suki. Here, Aaron discusses getting the call to join EastEnders, Ravi's relationship with Ranveer, and the advice his fellow cast mates have given him since joining the BBC soap...
What was your reaction like when you found out you were joining EastEnders? When my agent called and said “you've got it” I was in a state of trying to comprehend it and process that it was happening, it didn't hit me until I came in for the characterisation. I think for any actor there is a sense of relief and pride that you're going into something that you feel connected to, and get to embody a character that you can understand on some level.
What’s it been like for you to take on the role of Ravi? I think when you understand a character, but don’t necessarily relate to them – because his actions are so farfetched and he has a limitless personality and does what he needs to do to get ahead, you try and tap into the rooted reasons why they do what they do. I rely heavily on many different tools to help layer his journey, whether that's visuals and pictures, or music to help me feel like I understand the essence and the energy of the scene.
