EastEnders fans left in tears as BBC soap marks Peggy Mitchell anniversary

EastEnders fans were emotional as the long-running BBC soap marked the seventh anniversary of her death. Dame Barbara Windsor's Peggy Mitchell was an iconic character on the smash-hit soap, with her impact on the show still felt to this day. The former Queen Vic landlady was a fan favourite on Albert Square, and had a number of important storylines during her tenure on the show.
After lighting up the screen with her arrival in 1991, viewers were saddened by her exit in 2016, which saw Peggy take a lethal overdose of pills after battling with cancer. Barbara Windsor, who played the character from 1994 onwards, sadly died in 2020. On Tuesday's episode of the show, the Mitchell family paid tribute to the much-missed matriarch in her beloved Queen Vic with themed cocktails.
Phil Mitchell, played by Steve McFadden, told his son Ben: "We're supposed to be celebrating gran". Lovable barman Alfie Moon, played by Shane Richie, asked them: "Do you want a cocktail? We could do one to celebrate your gran's anniversary? How about Pegstar Martini or a Peggy Colada?" When Kat Slater, played by Jessie Wallace, went to the bar and ordered their drinks, Phil welled up. He said: "It's hard to believe it's been seven years, you know?" Alfie replied: "Wow, seven years? Well let's raise a glass to Peggy, yeah?" Peggy's exit came four years before Barbara Windsor died at age 83-years-old.The tender moment had viewers in tears.Taking to Twitter, fans shared their thoughts.
