A lad stole a couple's car then drove the wrong way down the M56 while being chased by police. Dashcam footage from the cops captured Cailen Smith, 22, parked up with the lights on moments after he stole the Ford Mondeo off the drive of the victims' house in Gatley.
As they drew closer he sped off, going through red lights and failing to stop despite warnings from police. At one stage he drove onto a public footpath before driving onto the contraflow and hard shoulder of the M56.
Smith, of Stanley Street, Cheetham Hill, eventually got out and ran along the hard shoulder before he was finally caught.

During his arrest he headbutted a police officer. Now, Smith has been jailed for three years after admitting offences of burglary, dangerous driving, failing to stop and assaulting a police officer. Prosecutor Jack Troup told Minshull Street Crown Court that the victim and his wife shared their home with his 99-year-old mother. They went to bed at around 9.30pm on August 1 this year, but he was later woken up by a phone call at 2.27am.
His neighbour told him that one of their cars was being moved off the driveway. He went downstairs to find the Ford was already gone, along with other items which had been stolen from inside the house.
