According to Dominic West, who portrays Prince Charles in the upcoming seasons, the phone call between him and Olivia Williams, who portrays Camilla, was filmed.
“I remember thinking it was something so sordid and deeply, deeply embarrassing [at the time],” Dominic shared with EW. “Looking back on it, and having to play it, what you’re conscious of is that the blame was not with these two people, two lovers, who were having a private conversation.”
He adds, “What’s really [clear now] is how invasive and disgusting was the press’s attention to it, that they printed it out verbatim and you could call a number and listen to the actual tape. I think it made me extremely sympathetic towards the two of them and what they’d gone through.”
If you’re unaware, Camillagate aka Tampongate, refers to a private conversation between Charles and Camilla in 1989 that was secretly recorded.
During the conversation, he had told her he wanted to “live inside” her trousers. She responded asking if he was going to be reincarnated as “a pair of knickers,” to which Charles responded saying that, with his luck, he’d return as a tampon.
Dominic‘s predecessor, Josh O’Connor, was adamantly against the scandal being portrayed.
The Crown season five will be out on November 9.
