Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has teased multiple possibilities about David Tennant's return as the Time Lord.
It was announced last month that the Paisley born actor, who played the iconic 10th Doctor in the BBC sci-fi series, would be returning to the role alongside Catherine Tate as companion Donna Noble for the 60th Anniversary special. However, the return of these two characters has left fans of the show confused about how it is actually possible, given their endings.
Russell, who previously was the showrunner from 2005-2010 and worked alongside Tennant and Christopher Eccleson, shed some light on the events taking place in the 60th Special. Writing in this month's edition of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies put forward a few potential explainers for how this could be possible.
He said: "A mysteriously forgotten excursion for the TARDIS in between Planet of the Ood and Sontaran Stratagem? Or maybe a multiverse thing, they’re all the rage these days. Maybe this is the Doctor and Donna from Universe 557, all set to collide with our own.
"Then again, maybe, just maybe, this return is so impossible that it’s actually an intricate illusion created by an old enemy of the Doctor’s. Or maybe an old enemy of Donna’s. Nerys!
"Of course, I wouldn’t give that away in the pages of DWM, would I? But then again. This magazine is the first place I ever revealed the name of Billie Piper’s Rose (in issue 340). So read carefully. There are truths in here."
Although it is unlikely Davies would give away the reason for their return in a magazine, his hint about potential 'truth' is sure to driving fans into a frenzy. This isn't the sure time he has teased information like this.

David Benedict Jessica Lange was once asked if there couldn’t have been someone on the set of the painfully overwrought Southern gothic movie, Beth Henley’s “Crimes of the Heart,” who could have got everyone to tone things down, to which she giggled, “You mean, like the Taste Patrol?” Large stretches of Theresa Rebeck’s new, wildly dysfunctional family drama “Mad House,” now running on the West End, suggest that the Patrol has been similarly missing in action. You can see why actors of the caliber of David Harbour and Bill Pullman — plus equally gifted British talents Akiya Henry and Sinéad Matthews — wanted to appear in this world premiere. Rebeck has barely been produced in the U.K., but it’s immediately clear she knows how to whip up bitterly comic set-pieces for actors to sink their teeth into.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media ReporterIt’s hard to escape the deflating sense that Disney’s “Lightyear” has remained stubbornly Earth-bound in its box office debut. At least, that’s the prevailing sentiment that’s greeted the latest Pixar film’s so-so $51 million opening weekend in North America. For industry analysts, those lackluster ticket sales were confounding because Pixar had been box office royalty and “Lightyear,” a spinoff of the cosmically successful “Toy Story” franchise, landed decent — though not euphoric — reviews.
