The mandatory use of face coverings in certain public spaces will come to an end next week.
Boris Johnson has announced that “once regulations lapse the government will no longer mandate the wearing of face masks anywhere”.
The Plan B measures introduced before Christmas to slow the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant will expire on January 26, and will not be renewed, the prime minister confirmed in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
That means that the law will no longer require people to wear face coverings in places like shops and on public transport.
However, the changes don't come in until next Thursday, January 27, once the restrictions have expired.
Until then, it is still a legal requirement to wear a face covering, unless you are exempt, in the following places:
In schools, face coverings are no longer required in classrooms.
Mr Johnson said the legislation around face coverings would be replaced with guidance and advice.
He told MPs: “In the country at large we will continue to suggest the use of face coverings in enclosed or crowded spaces, particularly when you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet – but we will trust the judgment of the British people and no longer criminalise anyone who chooses not to wear one.”
In Scotland and Wales, the wearing of face coverings in public indoor settings and on public transport will remain.
Mr Johnson also announced that people in England are no longer being asked to work from home.
The mandatory use of Covid Passes in large venues will also come to an end from January 27, although businesses can still choose to use them on a voluntary basis.
