Nick Knowles struggled to fight back tears on Tuesday night's episode of DIY SOS as it was explained that a family's daughter had died two weeks before filming. DIY SOS sees Nick and the team transforming homes for families in need across Britain. During the episode, Nick, 59, sat with the Champman family who opened up about the challenges they have recently faced.
Peter Chapman, a 60 year old former mechanic and hospital porter, is the full-time carer for his wife Sarah and daughter Suzanne, who is 35 but has a mental age of 12.The mother and daughter both have myotonic dystrophy, a long-term genetic disorder. Peter said: "As time went on, we realised it was going to get worse - and it did." The symptoms of the genetic disorder include progressive muscle wasting and weakness as the muscles are unable to relax after use.
Despite her challenges, Peter's daughter Suzanne still works a couple of mornings during the week, at the nursery she used to go attend. Peter had himself begun building an extension to his family home, which was beginning to fill up with specialist equipment and wheelchairs. However after he was diagnosed with fibromyalgia – a condition that causes extreme tiredness – he had to cut back on the building work.
