A Perthshire diver jumped to the rescue when a newlywed lost his wedding ring on a New Year dook in Loch Tay.
Belfast-based newly weds Sarah and Johnny Phillips were in Kenmore on New Year’s Day when traditionally many intrepid folk go for a dip in the loch.
Johnny jumped in with Sarah’s mum, dad, brother and friend.
But to his horror, as he swam in the 3m water, he felt his wedding ring slip off his finger.
Unable to retrieve the ring, the couple posted an appeal on the Aberfeldy Community Notice Board on Facebook.
This led them to semi-retired diver Tony May (60) who watched video footage of the dook to pin point the prized possession before taking to the loch in his scuba gear and finding it in 10 minutes.
Sarah told the PA: “I was on the shore, videoing my crazy family braving the cold then I saw Johnny’s face fall and he came out, utterly gutted - he’d lost the gold wedding ring I’d given him just six months ago.
“We had similar bands made and engraved with ‘Johnny and Sarah 10.07.21’, so this was an absolutely terrible thing to happen.”
Sarah (25), a personal banker with Santander and Johnny (33), an engineer and part time soldier, got married in Amulree last July. Aberfeldy-based photographer Iain Struthers snapped the happy day.
Sarah had grown up at Ardeonaig on the south side of Loch Tay and her mum Adele is a classroom assistant at Kenmore Primary.
The couple had come over to Perthshire from home in Northern Ireland to visit Sarah’s mum and dad Mark, both now living at Amulree, for New Year.
Sarah added: “The swim had been a spur of the moment thing. Johnny saw a video on his phone of friends back home going for a New Year’s Day dip and it made him want to do it. I blame my mum, she told Johnny she’d always

Elvis Costello has said that he will no longer perform his song ‘Oliver’s Army’ live, due to controversy over use of the N-word in the song’s lyrics. He has also urged radio stations to stop playing the song at all, rather than playing a censored version.Written about the Troubles in Ireland, and inspired by Costello seeing British troops patrolling Belfast, the musician says that criticism of the offending word in the song ignores the context of the full line in which it features – “Only takes one itchy trigger; one more widow, one less white nigger”.“That’s what my grandfather was called in the British army – it’s historically a fact – but people hear that word go off like a bell and accuse me of something that I didn’t intend”, Costello tells the Telegraph.
