Cynthia Littleton Business EditorThe loss of streaming rights to Indian Premiere League cricket has spurred the Walt Disney Co. to lower its subscriber target for its Disney+ Hotstar service in India.Christine McCarthy, Disney’s chief financial officer, disclosed the new guidance Wednesday during the company’s fiscal third quarter earnings conference call with Wall Street analysts.
McCarthy also revealed that Disney will now offer subscriber updates and target predictions for Disney+ Hotstar that are separated out from Disney+, in part because Disney+ Hotstar is a different service that includes sports rights and other content not found on Disney+ in other territories.Despite the warning about a slowdown in India, Disney reaffirmed its global subscriber target for Disney+ as being 230 million to 260 million worldwide by the end of its fiscal year 2024, or the end of September 2024. It also reaffirmed that the target for core Disney+ subscribers (not including Disney+ Hotstar) remains 135 million to 165 million by the close of fiscal 2024.
And Disney also reaffirmed its timeline for Disney+ to achieve profitability by fiscal 2024. As of the quarter that ended July 2, the total Disney+ tally, including Disney+ Hotstar, stood at 152.1 million subscribers, while Disney+ Hotstar alone has 58.4 million subscribers.
On Wednesday, Disney disclosed its target for Disney+ Hotstar service by the end of fiscal 2024 of up to 80 million subscribers, which doesn’t leave a lot of room growth in one of the world’s most populous markets. However, McCarthy suggested that Disney was being conservative and would reassess its India prospects after the dust has settled on the latest round of sports rights deals.“We intend to refine this

It seems like Elizabeth Holmes is still a little stuck in Amanda Seyfried‘s head. During a conversation about her Emmy nominated performance as the convicted Theranos founder, Seyfriend said she’s had moments during her current gig, the Apple TV+ limited series “The Crowded Room,” where she’s felt Holmes “poking through.” Considering how long Seyfriend played the role for the eight-episode series, that’s not a surprise.
Thanks to the #MeToo movement (and, to a certain extent, the COVID-19 pandemic), intimacy coordinators on movie and TV sets are the entertainment industry’s new normal. Todd Spangler NY Digital EditorThe headline number out of Disney’s quarterly results Wednesday seemed to show a notable milestone: The Mouse House had 221.1 million total subscriptions worldwide across its streaming services. On that individual metric, that means Disney is now just ahead of Netflix, which ended Q2 with 220.7 million total paid subscribers. But the value of those subscriber bases is much different.Domestically, for example, Disney+ generated about 39% as much revenue per subscriber as Netflix for the second calendar quarter, a measure referred to in the finance world as ARPU (average revenue per user).
Disney today cut its Disney+ subscriber growth target to between 135 million and 165 million by the end of fiscal 2024 as it expects users in India to migrate after losing streaming rights to cricket, a huge draw in the region.
Walt Disney’s total DTC subscribers all in totaled 221.1 million for the company’s fiscal third quarter ended in June. That was a big beat for Disney+ and its parent, and also marked the first time anyone has passed Netflix in total streaming subs.
