At the age of 34, he landed the lead role of Albert Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie, which earned him a Tony! Dick became a household name when he starred in his own sitcom from 1961 to 1966 called The Dick Van Dyke Show, which also featured Mary Tyler Moore as his wife. On the big screen, the comedian would win hearts in Mary Poppins alongside Julie Andrews and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, where he played a loveable screwball inventor.
