A deputy headmistress who taught at a controversial 'spiritual' school has escaped jail over a lunchtime drink driving smash after revealing she was getting treatment for a severe alcohol problem. Hayley Copplestone, 40, tested more than four times the alcohol limit after her BMW veered onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into an oncoming Nissan Juke at 1pm.
In the moments after the head-on collision, Copplestone staggered from her black 118 car and told the other driver she was 'sorry' before walking off as police were called to the scene. She was located at a nearby property shortly afterwards.
The mother of one had previously been deputy head teacher at the state-funded Maharishi Free School in Ormskirk, Lancashire, where pupils learn transcendental meditation calming techniques as part of their curriculum. But a court heard in recent months she had since been getting private counselling and joined Alcoholics Anonymous.

At Sefton Magistrates' Court, Copplestone, from Croston, faced jail after she admitted drink driving but she was sentenced to 12 weeks imprisonment suspended for a year after it was accepted she had taken steps to deal with her alcohol issues. The incident occurred on April 23 in Bootle, Liverpool - eight months after she left her job at the 212 pupil-school, named after the Indian yoga guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The school uses 'consciousness based education' methods, including transcendental meditation, where pupils practise ten minute sessions at least twice a day. Miss Shannen Carey, prosecuting, said: “A witness said she was driving along Kirkstone Road West when she saw a black BMW come out of Ford
