Manchester United are reportedly keen on West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice and the club are thought to have been monitoring his progress for some time.
It was suggested that United even weighed up making a move for him last summer, yet were put off by the fee the Hammers wanted for the 23-year-old.
The picture could be different this summer though with Rice entering the final two years of his current deal.
It's often at this stage that clubs will look to agree extensions or sell to avoid the player potentially leaving for a reduced fee further down the line.
United might then solidify their interest with an offer this summer, and frankly, it’s easy to see why they would.
Rice is a strong and tenacious midfielder who regularly comes out on top in duels both on the floor and in the air. He’s also fast and able to successfully jockey opponents in either direction, making him an expert at delaying and breaking up opposition attacks.
What separates him from other combative midfielders though is his quality in possession.
After winning the ball back, he has the quality to quickly distribute quick penetrating passes to teammates ahead. He’s also an incredibly powerful runner, able to drive at pace through the lines and carry his team up the pitch.
His standout ability in the latter is highlighted by the fact that according to Fbref, Rice has carried the ball across a higher accumulated distance than any other central midfielder from across Europe’s top five leagues - 3922 progressive yards.
For comparison, none of Fred (1101), Scott McTominay (1722) or Nemanja Matic (1632) have managed even half of that total this season.
