The fundraiser set up by Deborah James in support of cancer research in the UK has hit the £4 million mark after just four days. Deborah, 40, surpassed her original goal of £250,000 in donations soon after creating the Bowel Babe Fund when she announced she has devastatingly been moved to end of life care while suffering from stage four bowel cancer. Having received support on her Just Giving page from over 250,000 supporters so far, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the BBC podcaster looks set to reach near her new target of “£5 million by the weekend”.
Deborah’s heroic fundraising efforts come as doctors have heartbreakingly said they do not know how much time she has left. Deborah’s campaigning has brought awareness to the disease and her efforts during such a difficult time were recognised on Thursday as she was honoured with a Damehood, which the Queen was “pleased to approve”. Reacting to the news, the presenter said:"OMFG, this is crazy. I don’t know what to say.
I’m blown away and feel incredibly honoured. “I don’t feel like I deserve this. I can’t tell you what this means to my family, it’s so much to take in.” Deborah’s Damehood came a day after Prince William and Kate Middleton described her as “inspiring”, as they tweeted: “Every now and then, someone captures the heart of the nation with their zest for life & tenacious desire to give back to society.
