EXCLUSIVE: Halia Abdel-Meguid has been tapped to write and executive produce Death Note, a live-action series adaptation of the Japanese manga and anime series originally written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, which is in the works at Netflix. As revealed by Deadline in July, Death Note is one of the projects on the development slate of Upside Down, the newly launched production company of Stranger Things creators Matt & Ross Duffer under their Netflix overall deal.
A longtime fan of the manga and anime series, Abdel-Meguid — who speaks fluent Japanese and has previously lived in Tokyo — is taking on Death Note having worked with the Duffers on another Upside Down Pictures development project for Netflix. She is a writing consultant on their series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman.
The original Death Note focuses on a bright teenager who discovers a mysterious black notebook that gives him supernatural power over life and death, the latter caused by writing a person’s name in the book. The teen becomes intoxicated with power as he decides to cleanse the world of undesirables, as a law enforcement team tries to stop him. Netflix made a film adaptation in 2017, but the series will be an entirely new take on the original IP.
Abdel-Meguid also wrote on Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of The Devil in the White City. She got her start as an actress and musician in London before turning to screenwriting and graduating from AFI in 2018.

Following months of negotiations, Netflix has landed the rights to popular XBox video game Gears of War. The streamer will partner with The Coalition, the video game developer behind the series, and work with them to not only develop a feature film adaptation but also an animated series.

The movie world premiered at Venice in the Giornate degli Autori sidebar. IFC Films will release the film in select theaters and VOD on Jan. 27 and will stream exclusively on AMC+ in April 2023. “‘Life Upside Down’ is a romantic comedy following three couples, connected by friendship, love and work, who are each stuck in their respective homes in Los Angeles during the beginning of lockdown. Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer Lee Schroder has been named an executive in the motion picture marketing department at CAA. Schroder joins the powerhouse agency from Netflix. Reporting to department head Megan Crawford, she will help advise clients on all aspects of a film marketing and distribution strategy for theatrical and streaming releases. The marketing team works closely with CAA Media Finance, led by Roeg Sutherland and Benjamin Kramer, which funds and packages many indies and mid-budget commercial fare. Schroder will also advise the CAA roster on festival and awards campaign strategies, and curating the agency’s effective tastemaker screenings.

The news comes just almost two weeks after it first debuted on Sept. 21, quickly garnering over 196 million hours of viewership within its first week. Now, according to the streaming platform, has logged in nearly 300 million hours – 299.8 million to be exact – in its second week online, making it the second most watched English-language series in a week behind . Additionally, the series accumulated 496 million hours viewed in just 12 days, with Netflix estimating that at least 56 million households have streamed the series. Unfolding over 10 episodes, the limited series chronicles the life and crimes of Dahmer, who became known as the Milwaukee Cannibal after murdering (and sometimes doing other gruesome things to the bodies) of 17 men and teenage boys from 1978 to 1991. Peters portrays the serial killer while Nash plays one of his suspecting neighbors, Glenda Cleveland.

In its second week on the Netflix Top 10 chart, the series has become Netflix’s ninth most popular English-language TV show of all time. Netflix measures overall popularity by counting hours viewed in a title’s first 28 days on the streamer. After 12 days alone, “Monster” has been viewed for 496 million hours — and it still has 16 more days to climb even higher on the chart. According to Netflix’s figures, at least 56 million households have consumed all 10 episodes (approximately 8.8 hours total) of the limited series thus far. The Evan Peters-led series also leads the English TV chart for the second consecutive week, earning 299.84 million hours viewed. The accomplishment makes it the second most watched English-language series in a week behind “Stranger Things 4.”
