David Robert Mitchell Teams Up With Anne Hathaway & Bad Robot For New “Thrill-Ride” Movie At Warner Bros.

Adam B. Vary Senior Entertainment Writer Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) will direct an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed Shakespeare-era novel “Hamnet” for Amblin Partners. Zhao is writing the screenplay with O’Farrell. Amblin Partners, Hera Pictures, Neal Street Productions and Book of Shadows are all backing the project. O’Farrell’s New York Times bestseller reframes the creation of William Shakespeare’s most famous play, “Hamlet,” through the lens of the playwright’s wife Agnes (a variation on Anne Hathaway, the name of Shakespeare’s real wife), as she grieves the death of her only son, 11-year-old Hamnet, to the bubonic plauge. The novel also traces the beginnings of Agnes’ relationship with young Shakespeare — who is never named, known only as the world’s most famous playwright. In 2020, “Hamnet” won the Women’s Prize for fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.

It languished on the market for roughly two months as several studios kicked the tires. The rest of the ensemble includes Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teague. William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”) directs from a script by Moshfegh who adapted “Eileen” with Luke Goebel. Neon will release the film theatrically this fall. 

NEON has taken the North American rights to the Anne Hathaway starring Sundance Film Festival premiere, Eileen from director William Oldroyd (Lady Macbeth). The distributor is eyeing a fall theatrical release for the film.

Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff have signed on to write songs for forthcoming movie Mother Mary, Deadline reports. The A24-produced film stars Anne Hathaway as a fictional musician and follows her relationship with a fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel.

I talked about this in my write-up for “Peter Pan & Wendy,” the upcoming live-action remake from Disney, but David Lowery is the King of the “one for them, one for me” creative model. Almost like clockwork, the filmmaker will follow up an indie film with a big-budget film before coming back to another indie drama.

Just days after parting ways with Netflix, Nancy Meyers next movie has found a new home as sources tell Deadline Warner Bros. is in early talks to acquire the project. Sources stress no deal is done and they are exploratory talks but add there is something to it and discussions have begun on various details about project. Deadline reported on Tuesday that the film was leaving Netflix after the studio pulled the plug due to budget concerns. Meyers moved quickly to take the project out to other studios and Warner Bros. is looking like the front-runner to land the film. Meyers will write and direct the project but what is unknown is if the all-star cast will still be joining. Meyers was in talks with Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender to star but given that was the plan when Meyers had a much larger budget it is unknown if those actors stay committed to the project.
