Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over West Ham on Saturday handed David De Gea his fifth Premier League clean sheet of the season.
As it stands, there are eight keepers in the division who have secured more clean sheets than the United shot-stopper.
That at first glance looks like an unremarkable return, and perhaps a surprising one for fans who have watched the 31-year-old throughout the campaign so far.
In the eyes of many, despite United’s turbulent campaign, De Gea has been one of the team’s top performers. Yet that isn’t reflective in terms of the number of clean sheets he has accumulated.
Yet this merely highlights why judging a keeper on clean sheets alone is often a flawed measurement and doesn’t take into account the quality of the defence ahead.
Still, Premier League’s Golden Glove is still awarded to the goalkeeper who accumulates the most shutouts across a season.
United have had major defensive issues for large parts of the campaign, meaning De Gea’s average in terms of shots faced (4.81) is higher than each of those eight keepers with more accumulated clean sheets.
Yet if we were to utilise a more accurate form of goalkeeper analysis, namely expected goals against (xGA), then the high-quality of De Gea’s performances this season become more clear.
Post-shot xG is a metric that determines just how good a shooting opportunity is. It considers a range of factors including the distance from goal, the angle of the shot, the pace of the effort, how it was assisted and what part of the body was used to strike the ball. This is done by utilising historical shot data.
This means a more accurate analysis of whether a keeper should have conceded more or fewer goals based on the shots they have faced.
