Darius Campbell Danesh surprised a fan with a heartwarming performance – which would turn out to be his final one – just months before his tragic death aged 41. Darius, who won hearts around the world when he appeared on Pop Idol in 2001, was found "unresponsive" in his Minnesota, US, apartment on 11 August – although the cause of death remains unknown.Tributes have been flooding in for the singer, from the likes of Simon Cowell, who called him "charismatic", and his former Pop Idol contestant Gareth Gates who described him as "a soul that lit up every room", and Darius certainly displayed those qualities when he put on a surprise performance for Phones 4U boss John Cauldwell's elderly mother.
A touching video shared by John shows Darius singing Nessun Dorma to the bed-bound woman at Christmas time. Another clip shows him kneeling by her bedside, holding her hand as he sings Nat King Cole's Smile while she joins in before they both belt out another tune.
The video also sees John's mother clearly thrilled as Darius leans in to give her a warm hug and a kiss, before it cuts to Darius performing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah at her memorial service. John paid tribute to Darius on Twitter, attaching a long note about him and describing him as a "close family friend", revealing that the Pop Idol singer had been "one of mum's favourite singers".
Sharing the video of Darius' final performance singing to his mother, John wrote: "Watching these videos again of Darius with Mum brings tears to my eyes. "If there’s an afterlife, I hope they can reunite for another duet.
