He sent fans wild when he said no to Simon and opted to join producer Steve Lillywhite, who collaborated with him on the song Colourblind. Speaking in 2014, Darius said it was the “obvious thing to do” and it's what led to his success in the music industry.
He told Hello: "I understand why people thought I was mad to do it, but if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have a number one with Colourblind. I’m so lucky to be able to do what I love without having to beat to the drum of having someone else telling you what to wear and how to act."
Tributes have since been paid to the singer and West End actor in the wake of his untimely passing. You can leave your tributes in the comments section.
Pop Idol judge and music mogul Simon Cowell called Darius a “charismatic, funny and just a great person to be with”.
Taking to Instagram, Gareth Gates penned: "I can’t quite believe the news of my dear friend Darius passing. I’m heartbroken. Darius took me under his wing during our time in Pop Idol, like a big brother; always looking out for me and for that I thank you my friend."
A Pop Idol contestant at the same time as Darius, Jessica Pietersen of Liberty X wrote: "I’m so sad. Darius was only 41. He was an absolute gentleman & I know all of us who did Popstars with him will remember
