EastEnders star Danny Dyer has opened up about his decision to leave the show after nine years. The 45 year old actor confessed that he decided to leave the show after his relationship with wife Joanne Mas began to spiral. He reveals that he went to EastEnders bosses and told them he was “going to die” if he didn't take time out.
Danny said: “I turned around to the bosses of EastEnders and I said, ‘Listen, I’ve gotta go somewhere. I’m going to die’. "They was like, ‘Oh, OK.
Uh, right’. And so I sorted it myself and I paid for it myself." He also explained that he lost the plot for a while and began taking a lot of drugs, describing himself as a “f***ing lunatic.” Speaking on Jaime Winstone’s new podcast, Greatest Night Ever, the dad-of-three recalls when the realisation hit that if he didn’t sort himself out he would ruin his relationships with his wife and kids. He said: “You’re gonna be a shadow of the man that you are, you are gonna f*** everything up.
You’re gonna have no relationship with your kids.” Danny met wife Jo in 1992, but they split following the birth of daughter Dani Dyer in 1996. However the pair eventually reconnected and remarried in 2016. Danny has previously said he felt as if he was “rolling the dice” with his EastEnders exit.
Speaking on his Sorted with the Dyers podcast – which he hosts alongside Dani – he explained: “I'm taking that leap, because I need to and I think sometimes you have to gamble in life as that is what makes it exciting!” Following his departure from the long-running soap, the actor revealed that he will be giving acting lessons at an online drama school. Announcing his departure earlier this year, Danny said: “I am leaving EastEnders. I'm very lucky, I'm very grateful.
